For more than 10 years, Geof Peabody has been teaching pastors in Placerville how to shoot. And now, after a string of recent shootings – including one at a church in Texas – he feels the training has never been more needed.

“Until the clergy tells the faith based organizations decide they’re going to get their head out of the sand, and figure out they’re not doing what they need to do, which is have a sheep dog to protect the flock, we’re just going to have more of the same,” Peabody told ABC10.

“Our gun range is actually a church,” he said

Peabody says he’s not about having more guns, rather making sure more people are trained. Even so, it’s not lost of him or the ministers he trains that the idea of armed pastors is pretty controversial.

“It’s very controversial,” Holly Peabody, Geof Peabody’s wife who has ministries in Placerville, said. “Unfortunately, with the latest killing maybe more people will be open to having trained people in their churches.”

More many of the ministers who do train with Peabody, they say they don’t feel unsafe at their churches, but that they want to be ready if something happens.

“I’d rather be proactive and take care of things before they happen rather than wait,” Johnny Fuentes said, “Because if you’re not prepared you're in trouble.”
