Sacramento Convention Center may close during renovation to cut costs
The Sacramento Convention Center is getting a facelift and the City is discussing the possibility of closing business during renovations.
Earlier this year, the city council approved the expansion and renovation of the building to allow for a "larger, more attractive and competitive" Convention Center. No major improvements have been made to the center in more than two decades. The renovation will be split into two phases and developed by architectural firm, Populous Inc., with city staff and community input.
The first phase includes the expanded exhibit space, a new kitchen, pre-function space, additional meeting rooms, an east lobby and a new west lobby. There will also be a plaza added between the Community Center Theater and the Center.
The second phase would include a new 40,000 square foot ballroom on the second floor of the west side of the Center and a second kitchen attached to ballroom, as well as additional restrooms, and pre-function space.
ABC10 reached out to the City's Senior Development Project Manager, Desmond Parrington, to find out more about what to expect during the construction period.
Here are 5 things to know about renovation process:
1. Construction may start in late March 2018 and end in late 2020.
2. Based on the schedule recommended to the council, the Center may be closed between mid-July 2019 and late fall 2020 during renovations. The city council is discussing the possibility during its Dec. 12 meeting. The option is an alternative to working around the Center's events.
3. If the Convention Center closes during the renovation, the City expects to save money by reducing the construction time frame from 34 months to 24 months.
4. In case the Center does close while undergoing renovations, Visit Sacramento and the City are working to find alternate locations for scheduled events including CalExpo, the Golden 1 Center, the Sleep Train Arena and area hotels.
5. Phase 1 of the project is estimated to cost $125. The cost estimates for Phase 2 are still being worked out between the City, Populous Inc. and the contractor, AECOM-Hunt.
