Stockton lands a stage of the 2018 Amgen of California Bicycle Race
It's been a staple of Sacramento cycling for years, and now the city of Stockton is getting a crack at it.
Stockton will host a stage of the world renowned 'Amgen Tour of California' bicycling race.
"It's very competitive. You know communities all across the state compete for the Amgen Tour of California," said Wes Rhea, CEO of Visit Stockton. "And you know there are a lot of options when you look at California for starts and finishes."
Stockton last hosted a leg of the tour 10 years ago.
This edition will take place on May 17, 2018, as part of the fifth stage of the tour. The starting line will be between the Stockton Arena and the University Plaza Waterfront Hotel. Then it ends that day in Elk Grove.
The entire race begins Sunday, May 13 in Long Beach and concludes in Sacramento on May 19 after 7 stages.
Stockton estimates an economic impact of $1 million or more, based on previous tour stages, according to Visit Stockton. Hotels, restaurants and more should benefit.
The local bike community says Amgen shines a light on their efforts, too.
"Our goal is to get people on bikes and to make it safe to be on bikes. So whether that's through promoting events, increasing awareness, working with the city, having a major event like Amgen come to Stockton is going to be huge just for the visibility of what it will do for bicycling in Stockton," said Kari McNickle of the San Joaquin Bike Coalition.
