Teen wheelchair basketball player posts 'promposal' for celeb Hailee Steinfeld

Santi's date ditched him two days before last year's dance and with this being his senior prom, he is going all-in on his "promposal."

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A teenager in Iredell County is making noise with a "promposal."

Santi Rueda's date ditched him two days before last year's dance and with this being his senior prom, he's going all-in by asking actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld.

For those not in the know, a promposal is a creative way to ask a date to the prom. For Santi, he brought in his teammates from the Charlotte Rollin' Hornets basketball team.

His video promposal generated a huge buzz in the community and Santi is hoping he'll hear back from Steinfeld. It's Santi's dream to escort to South Iredell High School's prom on May 12.

"Almost a month away," he said.

Santi is a normal teenager. He loves sports, video games, hanging out with family and friends.

The singer-actress first caught Santi's eye in the movie, Pitch Perfect 2, and ever since, Santi's become a big fan.

"She's a great singer, talented actress, has a beautiful smile," said Santi.

He said he'd let her pick the dress and promises to take her to a steakhouse before the dance.

As for his dance moves? He's got them.

"I actually won the dance competition for last year's prom," he said.

The accomplishment is worth noting considering the fact that Santi is wheelchair-bound.

"I was born with spina bifida," he said.

Doctors told his mom to terminate the pregnancy, saying he wouldn't live to see his first birthday.

"Here I am, 18 years old!" he said.

Santi has a knack for overcoming odds. What he lacks in physical ability, he makes up for in personality and ambition.

“I can basically do anything, I just have to make modifications to it,” he said.

While asking a celebrity of Hailee's stature might be the equivalent of a basketball player making a heave from half-court, Santi has overcome greater odds.

“If she saw it and she just said no, I’d be fine with that because at least she has seen it. But if she actually does say yes, I wouldn’t know what to say. I would be so excited and speechless,” he said.

Even if Santi doesn't score a date with Steinfeld, he won't quit dreaming.

After high school, he's planning on attending community college with plans of continuing his wheelchair basketball career at a Division-I university.
