Finding a home for parrots at bird adoption fair

The Carmichael Library hosted a bird adoption fair with Mickaboo companion Bird Rescue. The non-profit group shelters birds all over California and tours the state educating people about birds.

The Carmichael Library is normally a quiet place to read. However, Sunday, it was full of squawking parrots.

The library hosted a bird adoption fair with Mickaboo companion Bird Rescue. The non-profit group shelters birds all over California and tours the state educating people about birds.

Scott Shipley is an adoption specialist with the group. He says the birds come from many different backgrounds.

"They all need homes, he said. “Some outlive their owners. Others have been confiscated from hoarders or lost or never claimed."

Mickaboo is one of the leading bird adoption groups in Northern California and they are starting to relieve a lot more birds. The reason being, many animal shelters can handle birds.

"Most don't have the facilities for them,” Shipley said. “A lot of times they will call us or the other rescues. There are a lot of other reputable rescues in Sacramento and the Bay Area."

Some of these birds can live up to 70 or 80 years. Mickaboo wants to make sure they find them a permanents home.

Before adoption, everyone has to take a two-hour bird care class, and the future home of the bird is inspected by Mickaboo.
