San Francisco Bay Area health officials say the number of possible cases of food illness from a community Thanksgiving meal has increased to 16.

The East Bay Times quotes Contra Costa Health Services as saying Tuesday they are investigating eight additional illnesses after initially reporting eight cases a day earlier, three of them fatalities.

All those who fell ill ate at the same Thanksgiving meal hosted by a church in Antioch, California, and held at the city's American Legion Hall.

The meal served 835 diners who included homeless people, residents of assisted living facilities, and anyone who wanted to have a good holiday meal.

County health officials are investigating to find what caused the illness and performing autopsies on the dead.
