It may not be a secret to those living there, but the popular Lake Tahoe-area town of Truckee just topped the list of America’s coolest ski towns.

Matador Network, a ski and snowboard lifestyle online publication, rated ski towns across the country, including British Columbia, and came up with a list of 21 towns, which included to Northern California locations.

“Truckee is rad because it sits in the middle of more ski areas than anywhere else in the West, and yet has none of the glitz of places like Aspen or Jackson,” according to Matador Network.

The online magazine noted the more than half-dozen resorts in the area, including Donner Ski Ranch, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Mt. Rose, and, of course, Squaw Valley.

“Squaw deserves special mention as host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and home to crews of wilderness athletes such as the late Shane McConkey, who have pushed backcountry skiing and sky sports to a completely new level,” Matador writes.

Mammoth Lakes was another Northern California ski town to make the list, ranking number eight on the list.

“With the possible exception of Jackson, Mammoth Lakes may have the single best wilderness access in the lower 48,” according to Matador. “There are great hot springs in the area both natural and commercial. And a short drive away, in nearby Bishop, are the Buttermilks and some of the best bouldering in the country.”
