What if taking the bus was as easy as Uber or Lyft?

The Sacramento Regional Transit District was expected to pitch on-demand bus service to the Citrus Heights City Council Thursday night.

"We are considering a six-month pilot to see if it works," said RT spokeswoman Wendy Williams. "We are very hopeful."

The pilot program would allow riders to request bus service on-demand using a smartphone application, similar to Uber and Lyft. Williams said bus rides would be "much less expensive" than the ride-hailing companies.

The program could start as early as next month.
