Suspect shot during foot chase with police in Citrus Heights

The shooting happened following a chase that began when police approached the man, who was standing with a woman near the parking lot of a hotel along Auburn Boulevard, police said.

A man was shot during an officer-involved shooting in Citrus Heights Sunday morning.

The shooting happened following a chase that began when police approached the man, who was standing with a woman near the parking lot of a hotel along Auburn Boulevard, police said.

Police made the self-initiated contact with the man and woman around 2:45 a.m. During the encounter, the officer conducted a search of the man. However, during the search, the officer said the man pulled away from him and began to run away.

The officer gave chase to the suspect as he called for backup.

During the chase, it is unknown what transpired between the suspect and officer, according to police; however, the officer fired his gun an unknown number of times at the suspect.

The suspect continued to run from the officer and stopped a short distance later in a nearby parking lot, according to police.

In the parking lot, officers discovered the suspect had been shot at least one time in his upper torso, police said. The officers called for paramedics and began to provide first aid to the male.

A search of the suspect then revealed a firearm, according to police.

The suspect, later identified as Nickolas Russ, 24, was taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed stable.

Police noted that Russo has an extensive criminal history, including firearms possession. Russo is also currently listed on parole for burglary and county probation for vehicle theft.

The involved officer was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave as per department policy.

Russo now faces charges connected to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, resisting a police officer, violation of parole, and violation of probation, police said
