Boy trying to collect 10,000 cans of food for needy families

Cameron Dax is just like any regular 12-year-old Carmichael boy; he likes to play sports and be outdoors. Except for one thing: This seventh grader’s Christmas wish is anything but ordinary.

"I want people to have a good amount of food so they don't get sick or anything,” Dax said.

That’s why with the help of his parents, Cameron launched ‘Cam’s Awesome Canned Food Drive.’ His goal is to collect 10,000 non-perishable food items by December 15 – and he’s well on his way.

On Sunday, he proudly showed ABC10 what he’s collect so far. "Maple and brown sugar oatmeal, which is in my opinion, my favorite kind of oatmeal,” Dax said.

This all started as a school project about seven years ago. Now on his own, Cameron has 13 drop-off locations with most of the donations going to the San Juan Central Food Bank.

"That's helping our families and the kids in our community so they can go to school, get a good education and have a full stomach,” said Jeff Dax, Cameron’s father.

Last year, Cameron collected more than 6,000 food items. To meet his goal this time around, he set up a GoFundMe account.

"He just wants to grow it every year, and more and more people want to get involved, and I'm proud as heck of him,” Jeff said.

Even though donation are pouring in, in his free time Cameron still hits the pavement, going door to door to collect cans.

"If people could donate, that would really be absolutely fantastic because it makes me feel really good inside that people are getting as much food as I am and it makes people happy,” Dax said.
