A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer killed during a pursuit was a mentor to aspiring police officers.
South Sacramento CHP officer Lucas Chellew was killed during a collison while in pursuit of the rider of a stolen motorcycle on Feb. 22.
A member of the South Sacramento CHP Explorer program, Evangelic Schuhmeier, says Chellew inspired her to pursue a career in law enforcement. Schuhmeier and many of her peers stood side-by-side with CHP officers during Chellew’s funeral.
The CHP Explorer is a program that teaches 15 to 21-year-old men and women important skills used in law enforcement.
“It’s a calling, it’s not a profession it’s a calling. And if you’re being called to do it then I would say accept it,” says George Tzikas, an Explorer in Sacramento. "That’s what I’m doing right now.”
Tzikas, 23, joined other explorers from Modesto, Stockton, and several Sacramento suburbs who played an important role during the funeral service. They helped direct traffic and handed out snacks and drinks to those who attended the service.
