A fire at James Rutter Middle School left three classrooms burned.

Officials with the Elk Grove Unified School District said classes have been called off for Thursday, April 6, because of extensive damage to the core area of the school. At approximately 1:45 a.m. Thursday, MetroFire Sacramento responded to the school fire, located on Palmer House Drive in Sacramento.

School officials initially wanted to keep the school open and move students to different classrooms.

There was no damage to the outside of the school. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Updates will be available online and on the school's Facebook page.
