Modesto police arrested a mother on murder charges for the death of her 3-year-old son.

Gilbert Escamilla stopped breathing Wednesday just after 9 p.m., according to a 911 call. When emergency personnel arrived at the home on Standiford Avenue, they began life-saving measures on the child before taking him to a local hospital. Gilert was in critical condition, according to police, and was flown to Madera Children's Hospital.

Early Thursday morning, the hospital told detectives Gilbert did not survive. An extensive investigation was launched after detectives learned the extent of the child's injuries -- burns, lacerations and bruising were visible. Police said his cause of death has not been determined yet.

Police said the child's 24-year-old mother Connie Escamilla and her fiancé, 20-year-old Kylie Beasley, were arrested on murder charges after evidence in the home was processed and other people living in the home were interviewed. Beasley was also arrested for torture.

Police are still in the beginning of their investigation. Evidence is still be collected and processed, detectives are continuing to speak with witnesses, friends and family of the victim. Police said the events leading up to the 911 call are still being determined.
