A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday morning in an apparent hit and run accident in Modesto, police officials said.

A jogger called 911 around 5:30 a.m. to report that a man was asleep in the middle of the entrance to the Big Valley Church on Tully Road. When officers arrived, they noticed the man had visible injuries and was unresponsive, police officials said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, who police say is in his 60s or 70s, was walking along the east side of Tully road when he was struck by a car. The car is described as a black 2001 to 2003 Honda Civic with major damage to the passenger side and front end and a broke windshield.

Police are now trying to identify the victim's family.
