An 11-year-old girl from Nevada City is working to make Highway 49 safer.

Her project started after two teens died a few months ago.

"It was sad cause there were a lot of people dying," said Jolie Allen, Fix 49 organizer. "I just wanted to do something about it."

Allen has created buttons and passed them around the community including grocery stores and gas stations.

She wants the highway between Grass Valley and Auburn safer by adding a median barrier and CHP increasing patrols and speed enforcement.

She said the hardest part of it all is talking to people since she's shy.

Her brother, Silas Allen, created Fix 49's website. He's 13 years old.

Their father, Scott Allen, says the biggest surprise is the confidence and growth he's seen in his kids.

Allen plans to present her project to CalTrans, CHP, and local leaders on March 22.
