On Wednesday night, one night before Thanksgiving, hundreds gathered in Old Sacramento for the annual tree lighting ceremony.

People chanted 'Light the tree! Light the tree!' and sang along to their favorite Christmas carols with bands and choirs from the area.

The lighting of the 60-foot tree was followed by the first 'Macy's Theatre of Lights' performance for the holiday season.

It took many volunteers and local businesses to help decorate the tree, with between 50,000 and 100,000 lights and decorations.

The lights show continues through Christmas Eve, with the tree serving as its centerpiece.

Performances are Thursday through Sundays at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. except for Thanksgiving Day.

Shows will also happen on Tuesday, December 19 and Wednesday, 20. The final performance will happen on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m.
