A Redding firefighter assigned to help with statewide efforts to battle massive fires burning in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties fractured his leg while on assignment, Fire Chief Gerry Gray said Monday.

The firefighter, who hasn't been identified by his department, suffered in the injury Sunday morning and was taken a hospital in Santa Barbara, where doctors confirmed the fracture to his lower leg.

"Our firefighter is in good spirits and is returning home," Gray said in a news release Monday morning.

Redding sent another firefighter to replace him, Gray said, one of the 13 total Redding firefighters sent since the onset of what Gray described as "the Southern California firestorm."
