The rumors are true: Cracker Barrel is coming to Sacramento, and the restaurant officially broke ground Monday.

The Tennessee-based chain broke ground on its first Sacramento-based restaurant at 1000 Howe Ave., formerly the Canton Super Buffet.

“We are thrilled to begin construction on the new store,” said Breeanna Straessle, a spokeswoman for the chain.

The new 10,000 square-foot restaurant is targeted to open in May 2018, according to Straessle, should seat as many 180 guests at a time.

Straessle expects the new restaurant will hire anywhere between 195 to 215 full- and part-time employees.

The new restaurant will come with all the antique décor on the walls one would expect from a Cracker Barrel, which Straessle noted, design teams will try to customize to the local community.

“Our design team will begin researching Sacramento’s history and selecting the antique décor soon,” Straessle said. “They’ll mock up the Sacramento store’s walls here at our HQ in a mock store.”

The new location will be the second Cracker Barrel plans to open in California – the first opening in Victorville in February 2018.
