The pilot of a plane that crashed in the backyard of a home in Rio Linda Thursday afternoon has died, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

The plane crashed around 3 p.m. in the yard of a home at U and 28th streets near Cherry Island Golf Course. The aircraft was a small plane with four seats and nobody else was on board, officials said.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and began CPR on the pilot, 71-year-old Marshall Michaelian of Meadow Vista. Michalian, however, passed away at the scene.

Officials say witnesses initially saw the plane flying in a southern direction at a low attitude, before it hit a power pole, trees and crashed into the yard.
