Should California teachers be armed?

Allowing teachers to be armed, it is a move that several schools in Texas have embraced, should California do the same?

Allowing teachers to be armed, it is a move that several schools in Texas have embraced.

The concept of arming teachers is currently illegal in California, due to a change to the state law in 2016 and again at the beginning of 2018.

While some are in favor of arming teachers, there are also those who disagree with the idea.

Nikki Milevski is the First Vice President of the Sacramento Teachers Association. She represents teachers in the California Teachers Union. She says they believe that arming school officials, whether it's teachers, faculty or staff, is not the answer.

It's a position she says they've held since 2013-- when Texas schools made it legal for teachers to be armed.

"We need to have reasonable gun laws," Milevski said. "We need to have sufficient mental support for our community. That would go a lot further than arming a teacher. The solution is to prevent something this kind of violence from ever occuring."

Several local teachers said they were not comfortable with the idea of carrying guns themselves - nor do they feel comfortable with other teachers having guns in school.

This is what the California Teachers Union says, but what do you think? Let us know on the ABC10 Facebook page.
