A Sacramento County sheriff's deputy was taken to the hospital Thursday night after he was struck by a car while making an arrest in South Sacramento.

The deputy was sent to a home on Wildfire Lane for a domestic disturbance before the incident happened, according to the sheriff's department. A 24-year-old man was allegedly trying to stab family members inside the home, he fled the scene when authorities arrived.

Deputies chased the suspect down Gerber Road before reaching him on Wilbur Way. The deputy was walking the suspect back to his patrol car along the soft shoulder of Gerber when a car traveling westbound struck the deputy.

The 53-year-old man driving the car stayed at the scene, and California Highway Patrol responded to investigate.

The deputy, an 18 year veteran of the sheriff's department, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
