A woman died in South Sacramento on Thursday night after she was hit by gunfire while inside a home.

Police said the shooting happened at around 7:30 p.m. at the 6700 block of Tortola Way. Several gunshots were fired outside the victims home. One of the bullets hit the victim, who was inside a home.

When the Sacramento Fire Department arrived, officials administered "life saving efforts." The woman was taken to an area hospital where she later died.

Investigators were called to the scene and canvassed the area for evidence and contacted potential witnesses. No witnesses have come forward yet, but police say they are investigating the shooting.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

The victim's identity will be released by the county coroner's office after her family is notified.
