Stockton business owner helping community after being brutally beaten

Stockton business owner helping community after he was brutally beaten.

A Stockton business owner has a new agenda for his community after he was brutally beaten while closing his ice cream shop last summer.

Roderick Tyler was closing House of Ice Cream when he was attacked.

After several months of recovery, he's back at his shop, serving the community in different ways.

"Going out to the community and figuring out what does Stockton need," Tyler said. "I came up with the idea to find four or five African American men or women that's interested in opening a business and I'll bring them here."

Tyler said opening a business isn't as hard as what some people may think and says it's all about following instructions.

He opened up House of Ice Cream with his wife because he loves to cook and wanted to turn his passion into a business.

Roderick grew up in Stockton and wants to show people younger than him there are options.

"My mind was not where it was now," Tyler said. "I see a lot of youth going down the same path I was going down and just not seeing the other opportunities like entrepreneurship and business. At first I was like I wanna be a rapper or a ball player now I see things differently."

He also wants to give back to the community because people showed support during his recovery.

"It really opens my eyes to see faith in humanity you know I mean?," Tyler said. "I didn't think people would for little old me come out and support just to see me get better. It makes me wanna help as many people as I can."
