Volunteers in Land Park pick fruit to help combat hunger

Fresh fruit from backyards is going to the Sacramento Food Bank.

A group of 100 volunteers spent Saturday picking unused fruit in the Land Park, Hollywood Park, and the Pocket neighborhood. The fresh fruit will be donated to the Sacramento Food Bank.

Soil Born Farms organized the event as part of the Harvest Sacramento Edible City Initiative.

Land Park resident, Peter Hansel, donated hundreds of pounds of citrus fruits from his backyard. Volunteers picked Valencia oranges, navel Oranges, and tangerines from Hansel’s trees.

“It's a win-win,” said Hansel. “We can't possibly use all of it – even by taking it to neighbors, friends, and work. It's great to see it put to use."

According to Nick Anicich, neighborhood manager at Soil Born Farms, nearly 7,000 pounds of fruit were collected on Saturday.

"Families are really excited to receive the fresh fruit. A lot of the times, they're only getting packaged food or even things like bread. It's not the same as getting a fresh orange right off the tree," said Anicich.

Soil Born Farms is looking for harvest leaders to help be a part of the solution around food waste. If you’re interested in getting involved, visit www.soilborn.org more information.
