Woodland marijuana festival canceled

It was designed to be a first of it's kind festival for marijuana, but it looks like those dreams may have gone up in smoke.

It was designed to be a first of its kind festival for marijuana.

The Harvest Tree Festival in Woodland was canceled Tuesday, just 60 days before the event was planned to happen.

The marijuana festival was supposed to take place on April 20. 4/20 is a special day in the marijuana community. But organizers say, it could be another year before that festival takes place.

"It's extremely frustrating but it's understandable," said John Javidan the festival organizer. "We know there's a lot of fears out there. We know there's a lot of concerns."

Javidan has been working on the event for three years.

"It's very heart-aching. You put a lot of time into anything and it's going to be hard. Especially if your heart was in it. And our hearts were in it."

We reached out to the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, who pulled the plug on the event by not approving the permit.

They say Both Yolo County and the City of Woodland have banned all commercial cannabis activities other than a limited amount of cultivation in the unincorporated area. The proposed event is at odds with the local laws.

For now, Javidan says, his 4/20 plans have gone up in smoke, until they can find a venue.

Javidan says he plans to continue fighting and is hopeful the festival will become a reality in Yolo County in 2019.

4/20 festivals are not something new in California. Every year, San Francisco allows Hippie Hill where tens of thousands of people gather to smoke pot in a park.
