Modesto police arrested an assault suspect Tuesday, who had officers in a standoff for several hours Monday evening through the early morning hours.

According to the Modesto Police Department, the standoff situation initially started as a domestic disturbance call to the residence in the 1400 block of Pearl Street due to a reported assault.

At first, police left the scene when they fund the female victim outside the home and male suspect inside, but later the department received calls of smoke coming out of the Pearl Street home.

When the fire department approached the home, they realized it was from a fireplace that the suspect had turned on. The unidentified suspect was alone in the home and wanted for an arrest from another charge, so police remained on the scene to take him into custody. When the suspect refused to surrender, the SWAT Team was also called.

The police department reported at about 2:30 a.m. they had reached a "peaceful resolution" with the suspect, who's been taken into custody and will be treated at a local hospital for self-inflicted burns before being booked on various assault charges.

The traffic on Pearl Street is closed to traffic during the standoff.
