Sac State billboard celebrates alumnus' 'Black Panther' success

The billboard features a photo of Coogler, director of the recently released "Black Panther," waving while wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase 'Friends Don't Lie.'

Not to be outdone by the billboards congratulating Greta Gerwig for her Oscar-nominated film, “Lady Bird,” Sac State is honoring celebrity alumnus Ryan Coogler with a billboard of its own.

The billboard features a photo of Coogler, director of the recently released “Black Panther,” waving while wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase ‘Friends Don’t Lie.’

It went up Feb. 15 on campus and will likely remain for several weeks, according to Sac State spokesman Craig Koscho.

It’s the third time the university has honored Coogler with a billboard. The other two were in celebration of his films “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed.”

The billboard grabs a little-reflected glory from Coogler’s success, proclaiming him, “Made at Sac State.”

Coogler has indeed attributed his success to his education at Sac State, thanking the professors who taught him both filmmaking and business.
