After knocking off the top-seeded Real Monarchs SLC in the first round of the USL Playoffs, eighth-seeded Sacramento Republic FC will continue its playoff push for another USL Championship this weekend.
The big question is where?
This all began with a now-deleted tweet from the league saying that Sacramento would host the Western Conference semifinals despite being the lower seeded team. That led to a tweet from the Republic's opponent, the Swope Park Rangers, out of Kansas City saying to "ignore the fake news" and that they would host Saturday's game.
At this point Sacramento already posted ticket information for a home game but the team's owner, Kevin Nagle, later tweeted that the club shared fans' frustration and were waiting on details from the USL.
Republic players were just as confused as fans and were asking if the site for Saturday's game had been confirmed after their practice Tuesday morning.
Originally the USL cited "challenges" with Swope Park's home field, Children's Mercy Victory Field, but did not go into detail about what those challenges were. The original news release naming Sacramento the home site for the game has since been deleted from the USL website and updated with the following:
"The 2017 USL Cup Playoffs Western Conference Semifinal between the No. 4-seed Swope Park Rangers and No. 8-seed Sacramento Republic FC will be played at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
After working with all parties, the Swope Park Rangers and USL agreed Saturday's playoff contest, and future contests in the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs, would be held at Children's Mercy Park, one of the finest venues in Major League Soccer.
The League would like to thank the ownership and the executive teams of both the Swope Park Rangers and Sacramento Republic FC for their professionalism and commitment to the game. The USL sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused to the supporters of the Swope Park Rangers and Sacramento Republic FC, and to the players and partners of both organizations. We look forward to the upcoming Western Conference Semifinal at Children's Mercy Park and to the remainder of the 2017 USL Cup Playoffs."
According to the Republic FC Twitter account, any Sacramento fans who purchased additional tickets for what they thought would be a home match on Saturday will be refunded. It will just take a few days for that to be reflected on their accounts.
Republic FC has confirmed watch parties for Saturday's semifinal match which begins at 2 p.m. at SacTown Sports Bar in Old Sacramento, and at de Vere's Irish Pub and Chando's Cantina, both located in downtown Sacramento.
