City Council vote approves moving Kings' G-League team to Stockton

NBA basketball is headed to Stockton, well, sort of.

The Reno Bighorns are officially headed to Stockton.

Stockton City Council voted a unanimous 5-0 on Tuesday night to approve the lease with the Sacramento Kings to utilize Stockton Arena; essentially relocating the minor league team to the city.

The Kings' G-League affiliate Bighorns will now be the Stockton Kings.

The team logos and branding will be unveiled later this Spring, according to the team release.

“Our NBA G League team has been an incredible asset to help prepare players for NBA action and bringing the team closer to Sacramento will allow us to continue to build on that success and increase efficiency to this valuable development tool,” said Sacramento Kings General Manager Vlade Divac in the release. “Kings fans in Stockton will now have an opportunity to see the next-generation of NBA players each week.”

They will be hosting an open job fair at the arena from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on April 24. The job fair is for full-time positions as hiring managers will be on-site, and applicants must be older than 18.

The organization will also join Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs on May 24, for the first ever Stockton Kings Community Day.

“It is my honor to welcome the Kings organization to Stockton and I look forward to watching NBA G League action at the Stockton Arena,” said Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs in the release. “The Kings have been known for their tremendous impact in the community and we’re excited to have their support as we continue to reinvent Stockton.”
