Detours planned this week on Hwy 50 near Echo Summit

Caltrans warned drivers to expect delays this week on Hwy 50 at Echo Summit because of rock work starting Monday.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — Caltrans is warning drivers to expect delays on Highway 50 near Echo Summit beginning Monday.

Rock scaling and slope stabilization work starts at noon to 6 p.m. Caltrans said to expect about a 30-minute delay on Highway 50 between Sacramento andSouth Lake Tahoe.

When to expect detours

  • Monday, March 21 – 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 22 through Thursday, March 24 – 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, March 25 – 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Drivers will be detoured along Johnson Pass Road with one-way traffic control to reduce congestion over Echo Summit, according to Caltrans.

"Rock scaling activities have been in effect since early March after a large boulder fell onto U.S. Highway 50, blocking traffic in both directions," Caltrans wrote in a statement.

Commercial vehicles and drivers towing trailers will remain on Highway 50 and can expect between 30 to 45 minutes of delays with one-way traffic control.

Caltrans is also warning drivers about delays on Highway 50 between Kyburz and Strawberry for vegetation removal work following the Caldor Fire in 2021.
