Drought in Europe may mean one of our favorite snacks, french fries, will cost a little more soon.
Some of the biggest exporters of french fries worldwide, according to this website, are the Netherlands and Belgium. Lack of rain is hitting the crops hard, including potatoes. The peak growing season is April 1st through September 30. Precipitation was very limited and temperatures for some months hit all time highs.
Over the last 12 months, the Netherlands recorded many more warmer than average temperatures than below. The growing season ended on a warm and dry note too with September being the third hottest and third sunniest month since measurements began.
Meteorologists in Poland and Germany are reporting similar problems with dry soil and lack of rain. They say when the fields are plowed there's a huge cloud of dust behind.
At least we have California tomatoes for our ketchup.
