Teacher of the Month September 2013 - John Buckmaster

SACRAMENTO, CA - His students said when you walk into John Buckmaster's classroom, you know you're in for something special.

"He always has a song playing for us," student Yesica Lopez said. "So, when we come into the classroom, he pumps us up and we are excited to learn and to be here."

From the hats to just his style of teaching, Valley High School economics and history teacher John Buskmaster said connecting with his students is what makes his job his passion. And after teaching for more than 10 years, Buskmaster said he has learned a thing or two from his students as well.

"I think the students here have shown me perseverance," Buckmaster explained. "A lot of my students have difficulties at home and yet they still come and they go on to do amazing things."

Buckmaster's dedication goes beyond the classroom. He assists with the Health Tech project for students. It's designed to get students to address community health problems facing specific ethnic groups. In turn, they become part of positive change in their own community.

"What I really want students to see is they can make an impact in the world and go out and do something with your lives," Buckmaster said.
