Sacramento business delivers cookies to your door

SACRAMENTO, CA - If you're craving a cookie, warm and hot out of the oven, and an ice-cold milk during a late night, a Sacramento start-up has the answer with the city's first late-night cookie delivery service.

Will Countryman baked up the idea behind "Cookies and Milk" last December.

"I just really liked the idea and I thought it would be cool for me to have a service like this," Countryman explained.

A month later, "Cookies and Milk" was in full swing. Since starting in January, the shop has already sold about 4,800 cookies.

Friend and customer George Moua said he tries to order some cookies every week. His favorite: the chocolate chip.

The cookies are baked from scratch at a downtown commercial kitchen. "Cookies and Milk" then delivers the sweet goods three days a week, Thursday through Saturday, from 8 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.

Just 6 months in, the profit margin is getting a little sweeter.

Like any star-up, there are risks. For Countryman, it was juggling being an entrepreneur and being a college student.

"My grades were a factor, financially a little bit," Countryman said. "But mostly it was just time. It's more than just delivery hours, there's prep time."

Fortunately, the UC Davis philosophy major graduates this year.

"I like to consider this my MBA, my personal MBA," Countryman said.

You might call this his culinary school of hard knocks - invaluable lessons in business and satisfying your late night sweet tooth along the way.
