Scouts have gone to the dogs

SACRAMENTO, CA - Man's best friend can now also earn merit badges for citizenship and service with the Dog Scouts of America, and pet owners are welcome to join them.

All over the country, there are chapters of ofDog Scouts of America. Paradise Ridge Dog Scouts Troop 206has been up and running for the past two years. The troop has about 14 members. Most of them are cadets working toward becoming full-fledged scouts.

Dog Scouts helps our furry friends become well trained canines and their owners to become responsible pet parents.

"A lot of times dogs are not well mannered. They do things in the community that people get upset by," Troop Co-Leader Shelly Teel explained. "We pick up trash. We pick up stray dog poo. We help our dogs to greet nicely."

"We help the dog; the dog helps us,"Troop#206 Co-LeaderKristy Copp said. "And we help the community be becoming responsible and showing other people in the community what responsible pet ownership is all about."

Once dogs become scouts, they can earn up to 68 badges.

Dogs can earn badges for dock-diving, dogtography, painting, therapy dog work and go on hikes.

"We're working on getting Baby a service badge because she spent quite a bit of time in some senior facility and care facilities," troop member parent Royce Brister said.

Troop 206 worked with the Chico Police Mounted Patrol and members helped make donations to the fire department.

"Recently, we raised some money for some (pet) oxygen masks for our community," Teel said.

Those pet oxygen masks kits went to the fire department and Cal Fire.
