Modesto Police: Mother shot two young children before turning the gun on herself

Police believe that Lisandra Corrales killed her two children before turning the gun on herself. Investigators are still working to find a motive.

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — Homicide detectives are investigating the deaths of three people, including two young children, whose bodies were found early Sunday inside a Modesto home, authorities said.

According to the Modesto Police Department, Lisandra Corrales, 28, Pierre Hutado, 6, and Nathan Hurtado, 4, were killed in an alleged murder-suicide.

Police believe that Corrales killed her two children before turning the gun on herself. Investigators are still working to find a motive.

“I feel for that family. It is so sad,” neighbor Athena Rodriguez said. “I cannot believe that happened so close to my house. It's sad. It's horrible.”

Rodriguez said she was just about to go to bed when she saw first responders arrive to her neighborhood.

“I was scared because I saw so many cops and ambulances, and you don't really hear too much of that stuff around here in this neighborhood,” she explained. "It's really quiet around here, so to see something like that was kind of scary. I have a son, so it's kind of scary.”

Investigators are treating the case as an "isolated incident," Graves said.

Ernesto Martinez says he's still surprised this all happened just a few homes away from where he lives.

"[The neighborhood] is really family-oriented, a lot of families, quiet, never had problems here," he said. “I have a 7-year-old, so it hits close to home."

Many neighbors told ABC10 they don't know much about the family who lived at the home where detectives spent all Sunday morning investigating.

“I think that house was just for rent, and I think they just moved in in January – so I think they're new to the neighborhood – about three months or so,” Rodriguez explained.

Janitzi Barragan lives along the same cul-de-sac where the incident took place and said she remembers seeing one of the boys waiting for the school bus, but she says she never talked to the family.

"It's very sad, very sad,” she said solemnly. “They were so young, and I feel really sad for them.”
