A Modesto man has been sentenced to life in prison for a hit-and-run, which took the life of a 19-year-old woman.

Luiz Miguel Ortega, 34, was convicted of second degree murder for the death of Nanar Zaia in 2015.

Ortega was speeding on Haddon Avenue when he ran a stop sign and hit Zaia.

Ortega's blood alcohol level at the time was over twice the legal limit and tests showed he had methamphetamine and marijuana in his system.

Ortega has previously been convicted for two other DUIs, which made him eligible for murder charges. After a two week trial he was convicted of second degree murder.

Ortega was sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison Thursday.
