Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Northern California

SACRAMENTO — It’s a true American holiday.

Did you know people in Ireland really didn't start celebrating St. Patrick's Day until the 1990’s, when they saw how profitable it had become in the United States?

We started the party in the 1880’s with parades in Boston, New York and Chicago leading the way. Even Savannah, Ga., got in on the fun.

St. Patrick’s real name was Maewin Succat.

The Sacramento area has a parade of note, with festivities going on in Murphy's and Old Sacramento featuring Grand Marshal Mark S. Allen. The fun starts at 11:30 a.m., with streets closed for the parade until 3 p.m. The parade begins promptly at 1 p.m. with over 1,000 marchers!

Party on!
