SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - The San Francisco 49ers have claimed defensive lineman Xavier Cooper off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

The 49ers placed defensive lineman Ronald Blair on injured reserve Sunday to make room on the roster for Cooper. Blair has a broken hand and could be designated to return from injured reserve after missing at least eight weeks.

Cooper played 27 games the past two years with Cleveland and had 39 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks. He was waived Saturday.

The Niners also signed eight players to the practice squad: receivers DeAndre Carter and DeAndre Smelter; offensive linemen JP Flynn and Darrell Williams Jr.; tight end Cole Hikutini; cornerback Asa Jackson; quarterback Nick Mullens; and defensive lineman Noble Nwachukwu.
