The Seattle Seahawks might have been eyeing Colin Kaepernick to back up Russell Wilson this season, but any plans to move forward have now been put on hold. There were conflicting reports as to whether Kaepernick kneeling in protest during the national anthem played a role.

Seattle had arranged to bring Kaepernick in for a visit this week but postponed the trip when the quarterback “declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem next season,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter cited “league sources” for the information.

The former 49ers starting quarterback made headlines in 2016 when he refused to stand during the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice. It started a trend that many players league-wide followed including some Seahawks.

Kaepernick opted out of his contract at the end of the year and became an unrestricted free agent that March. He remained unsigned through the 2017 season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted some updates to the Schefter report.

Rapoport confirmed the Seahawks had, in fact, scheduled a visit, but stated the postponement was not related to future anthem plans.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider plan to meet with the quarterback at a later date, once he considers “how he wants to proceed on everything,” per Rapoport.

After releasing backup Trevone Boykin following his arrest for felony domestic violence, Russell Wilson remains the only quarterback on the Seahawks roster.

This story is continuing to develop.
