Oroville man suspected of abusing girlfriend's son

SACRAMENTO – A man was arrested on Friday in connection with an investigation into a case of severe physical abuse of a young boy in Oroville.

Lieutenant Byers of the Oroville Police Department said the investigation was launched after the 8-year-old son of David William Barber's girlfriend was found with two severe black eyes, bruising to both sides of his buttocks, and other small bruises on his back and chest.

Barber, 32, of Oroville, was determined to have repeatedly used a belt on the boy, in addition to punching him in places on his body including the genitals while living with the youth's mother, Byers said.

Barber was booked into the Butte County Jail on charges of infliction of corporal punishment on a child resulting in injury, child endangerment and committing a felony while being out of custody due to a pending sentencing of elder abuse.

Byers said officers were still investigating the matter and asked anyone with additional information to contact the Oroville Police Department at (530)538-2448.
