Robbers target gift cards at convenience store

VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) - Police in a San Francisco Bay Area city say robbers have made off with thousands of dollars from a convenience store by loading the money onto gift cards.

The same 7-Eleven store in Vallejo has been robbed twice over the past week and a half. Police say during the most recent robbery on Feb. 8, one of the suspects took the clerk to a back room while an accomplice loaded $6,000 onto gift cards.

The previous robbery on Feb. 2 also involved gift card theft - about $1,500 in that case.

Vallejo Police Lt. Herman Robinson tells the San Francisco Chronicle the suspects likely have retail experience given their knowledge of how to load the gift cards.

The cards are untraceable.

Investigators have not identified the suspects or made any arrests.
