The Sacramento City Council approved a conditional-use permit for a proposed casino in downtown’s historic Elks Tower, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Supporters of the project claim it will provide jobs and a 24-hour entertainment venue. Steve Ayers, a local developer, secured the permit and has plans to operate the Elks Casino in the 14-story building on J St..
Sean Wright, president of the Alkali & Mansion Flats Historic Neighborhood Association, was one of many supporters of this project.
Wright told the Sacramento Bee, “We support approval of the conditional use permit and look forward to the project’s completion. This will add a fantastic new entertainment venue to the downtown scene.”
There were people in opposition of the permit, including two other local casino owners, but the council denied their appeal and stated "competition is a good thing."
