FULL LIST: Local Christmas tree lighting events

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it is time to celebrate the holiday season. Though some may have started a bit earlier.

One of the most fun and beloved holiday traditions is lighting the Christmas tree.

Several cities around the area will be holding their annual Christmas tree lights, and we have the complete list with details below. 

Folsom

Friday, December 1 beginning at 6 p.m. 

The Historic District is hosting the free community event at the Amphitheater and Plaza. Spend time with Santa, run up and down Sutter Street, and enjoy face painting and bounce houses! A countdown to the tree lighting will begin at 7:30 p.m. near the ice rink. 

Davis

Thursday, November 30 beginning at 6 p.m. 

The City of Davis will host their tree lighting ceremony at the E Street Plaza following the annual Children's Candlelight Parade. Visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus as they greet guests or enjoy a free showing of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at the Varsity Theater. The Davis High School Cheer Team will be selling holiday treats as people wait for free horse-drawn carriage rides. Come in your ugliest sweater to participate in the city's Ugly Sweater Contest. 

Roseville

Thursday, November 30 beginning at 6 p.m. 

The City of Roseville will hold their annual tree lighting at Vernon's Street Town Square. The free event will have activities the whole family will enjoy, including, decorating cookies, visiting Santa, a kids activity zone, and food. The tree lighting will happen rain or shine.

West Sacramento

Saturday, December 2 beginning at 6 p.m. 

The West Sacramento Christmas tree will be lit up in front of City Hall during a 2.5 hour family-friendly event! The public is invited to enjoy free refreshments, performances by local youth choirs, and the arrival of Santa on a fire truck. 

Rocklin

Saturday, December 2 beginning at 4 p.m. 

Co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, the Old Town Rocklin Tree Lighting will be held at Old St. Mary's on Front Street. The event is completely free for the children of the community, who will enjoy bounce houses, wagon and train rides, face painting, crafts, selfies with Santa, food, hot chocolate, and caroling. Local musical groups will perform before the tree is lit at 7 p.m. 

Sacramento

Thursday, December 7 beginning at 4 p.m. 

Sacramento will host their tree lighting at the West Steps of the State Capital, according to SeeCalifornia.com. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr and First Lady Anne Gust Brown will host the event in it's 86th year. The 65-foot-tall tree will be lit will approximately 10,000 energy-efficient LED bulbs.

Fair Oaks

Saturday, December 2 beginning at 3 p.m. 

The City of Fair Oaks will host their tree lighting at Plaza Park. The free event will feature art and craft vendors, free pictures with Santa, food trucks, Christmas cookie decorating, and much more. The event is rain or shine, and the tree will be lit following the Christmas Parade.

El Dorado Hills

Saturday, December 2 beginning at 4 p.m. 

Visit the El Dorado Hills Town Center for the annual free Christmas tree lighting. The event will feature a "Stuff Your Stocking" event where children will visit participating businesses to fill their stockings with special gifts. Live bands will play from 4:30 until 6 p.m. Free cookies and hot chocolate will also be provided. 

Carmichael

Thursday, December 7 beginning at 5 p.m. 

Join Carmichael Recreation and Park District as they host the annual tree lighting at Carmichael Park. The River City Band will be live, while children visit Santa. Canned goods are required, one can per child. All canned goods will be donated to Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Food trucks will be on site, including BaconMANia, Chando's Tacos, Cowtown Creamery, and much more.
