Inventor hits Kickstarter jackpot with 'Coolest Cooler'

PORTLAND – A Portland man's ultimate beach party invention has inspired people from around the world to pledge more than $2 million to his Kickstarter campaign.

Ryan Grepper of Portland came up with the idea of the 'Coolest Cooler,' a drink cooler, blender, boombox, electronic device charger, cutting board and gear tie-down in one.

Grepper put the idea on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, asking for $50,000 to help fund the cooler's production.

According to Grepper, "The COOLEST cooler is 60 quarts of AWESOME packed with so much fun you'll look for excuses to get outside more often."

More than 12,000 people across the world agreed. With 49 days to go, supporters have already given the campaign $2,365,000.

Most of the pledges were for $185, which promises people their very own Coolest Cooler. Grepper said that's a discount of $115 off what he plans to sell the coolers for after his Kickstarter campaign.

Those numbers were way beyond Grepper's expectations. Last week, he told KGW meteorologist Matt Zaffino that he just wanted to make enough to produce 500 coolers.

"Basically, to get this made I need about 500 people who want a Coolest Cooler, so we can get this made and produced and out there," he said.

Grepper expects to start shipping the Coolest Coolers starting in January, so expect to see the boombox/margarita machine/iPhone dock on beaches next year. Oh yeah -- it's also a cooler.
