Pedestrian wearing headphones hit, killed by train

SACRAMENTO - A woman listening to music on headphones apparently did not hear a train coming up behind her and was struck and killed in the Truckee area Wednesday.

The Truckee Police Department identified the woman as 27-year-old Janika Rose Hayes, a new resident of Truckee.

Police said investigators learned Hayes was either walking or running along the railroad tracks westbound under and east of the Highway 267 overpass north of the Truckee River just before 1:40 p.m. when a westbound Union Pacific freight train hit her. The train operators repeatedly sounded the engine horn to warn Hayes and applied the brakes but couldn't avoid Hayes.

Police said it was believed Hayes had intended to cross over the river at some point and take a jog along Legacy Trail.

The Truckee Police Department reminded it is illegal to walk on railroad tracks as well as dangerous, as it wearing headphones or earphones on both ears while walking or running.
