Sacramento women killed in I-80 wreck ID'd

SACRAMENTO - Two women who died in a solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Auburn on Thursday were identified by the Placer County coroner as 23-year-old Shapre Nina Monique Nichols and 22-year-old Antoinette Danielle Powell.

Placer County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Dena Erwin said the women and 24-year-old Robnisha Briggs were in a 2006 Nissan Altima traveling westbound in the far left lane of the freeway at about noon. Their car suddenly swerved across all lanes to the right and hit an embankment before overturning, veering back into traffic lanes and coming to a stop back on its wheels.

The driver and the passenger in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene. Briggs, who was sitting in the right front passenger seat, was transported to a Roseville hospital with minor injuries, Erwin said.

The women were wearing seat belts, it appeared.

Erwin said it wasn't known if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

All freeway lanes were reopened to traffic by 2:40 p.m.
