Knowing the rules on 'Tiny Houses'

As the tiny home movement grows in popularity, we asked what are the rules? (Oct. 12, 2016)

Popularity is swirling around the “tiny home” movement, but before shelling out the cash you should know the rules on micro homes in your neighborhood.

Urban Design Manager for the City of Sacramento, Bruce Monighan, said there is no rule against building a tiny home if it’s on a permanent foundation.

However, if the home is put on wheels, current rules put it in the same category as RV’s or mobile homes.

The home could be parked on the street for up to 72 hours but it is illegal to live in a vehicle.

"So we have prohibitions about where you're going to park a recreational vehicle and how long you can leave it there," Monighan said.

Other Northern California cities, like Stockton, have similar rules to Sacramento.
