Employees in California will have some additional benefits to look forward to next year. Here are three workplace-related laws that take effect Jan. 1, 2018:
1. $11 an hour minimum wage
For employers with 26 or more employees, minimum wage will increase to $11 an hour. Employers with 25 or less employees will see minimum wage increase to $10.50 an hour.
This is part of the gradual increase to $15 an hour minimum wage by 2022.
2. Parental leave is required for small businesses.
This law requires employers with 20 or more employees to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave to eligible employees. Eligible employees are those with more than a year and at least 1,250 hours of service.
Employees can use paid sick and vacation time during the leave.
3. Employers cannot ask for an applicant's prior salary.
This law bans employers from asking for an applicant's salary history. Employers also cannot use salary history as a factor in determining a job offer and what salary to offer that potential employee.
Moreover, employers are required, upon request, to provide a pay scale to the applicant.
