Truckee High School football coach dies in head-on collision

Truckee High School is mourning the loss of their beloved football coach after he was tragically killed in a Saturday night head-on collision.

Bob Shaffer was the football coach at Truckee High School football team for nearly 20 years. He was killed and his family injured Saturday night as a result of the head-on collision, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

CHP-Quincy, which is handling the investigation, reports a Sacramento man, David Slaughter, 54, “allowed his vehicle to cross into the northbound lane, into the path of the Shaffer vehicle,” according to a statement.

Shaffer was driving with two passengers in the car, Lisa Shaffer, 61, and his son Patrick, 22, who also suffered minor to moderate injuries, according to CHP-Quincy. Shaffer, sadly, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Slaughter was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. He was later placed under arrest, according to CHP, though no further details were available.

“Coach Shaffer was a pillar of our small community,” CHP-Truckee officials wrote in a Facebook post. “He was the Head Coach who led the fabled Truckee Wolverines to a 4-peat [sic] State Championship. Many of our own kids played for Coach Shaffer over the years and as a community this is an extremely tough loss.”
