Woman needs 25 staples in head after interrupting burglary

A woman required 25 staples in her head after allegedly being struck across her forehead by the butt of a rifle during a burglary in a Truckee home.

The 35-year-old woman was just opening the front door of her friend’s Olympic Boulevard home on Oct. 28 when she was confronted by two men wearing ski masks, armed with rifles, according to Truckee police.

One of the men approached her and struck her with the butt of the rifle causing the laceration to her head, police said.

The two men then fled from the home, which, according to police, apparently contained a marijuana grow. Police believe the two men were in the home with the intention to steal the marijuana.

The primary residents of the home were not there at the time of the burglary, police said.

The victim was bleeding heavily from her head, police said, but was able to contact a friend for a ride to a nearby hospital where she received treatment and called police.

An investigation was launched inside the home, eventually leading to the Oct. 31 arrest of two men, Stewart DeVaney, 21, and Simon Wyss, 19, police said.

The pair were found after a search warrant was issued at their home. Inside, detectives found one of the rifles they believe was used in the assault. The rifles had allegedly been stolen during a prior burglary, police said.

Along with the rifles, detectives found jewelry, money and narcotics suspected to have been stolen from the Olympic Boulevard home, according to police.

DeVaney and Wyss were both arrested and face multiple felony charges, including burglary, possession of stolen property, armed robbery and various narcotics charges.
